A small-system ensemble Monte Carlo simulation of supersaturated vapor: Evaluation of barrier to nucleation

چکیده
A small-system grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo method is developed to evaluate cluster size distribution and barrier to the nucleation in a supersaturated Lennard-Jones vapor. The theoretical foundation is a physical cluster theory in which the Stillinger cluster is used as a prototypical physical cluster. Using method of Mayer’s cluster expansion, the cluster–vapor interaction is effectively taken into account. From a separate canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulation using a test particle method, the averaged volume of the cluster is obtained and is also incorporated in the small-system ensemble simulation. By this implementation our simulation is computationally more efficient compared to that based on the n/v Stillinger cluster theory in that instead of searching the saddle point on a two-dimensional free energy surface a function of cluster size n and volume v) one needs only to find the peak on a free energy curve a function of n only . A comparison with the height of barrier obtained from a large-system ensemble Monte Carlo simulation K. Oh and X. C. Zeng, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 4471 1999 shows that omission of the vapor–cluster attraction can cause an overestimation of the height by several kBT . © 2000 American Institute of Physics. S0021-9606 00 50301-8

Writing and Applying a Monte Carlo Simulation Code to Examine Aerosol Vapor Pressure - an Important Factor in Climate Modeling
Aerosol nucleation is an important factor in climate change; however, the process of aerosol formation involving atmospheric pollutants is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the Kelvin equation (KE) and Classical Nucleation Theory (CNT) can accurately describe the vapor pressure of the nano-droplets involved in aerosol nucleation. A mathematical comparison dem...
متن کاملA computational study of homogeneous liquid–vapor nucleation in the Lennard-Jones fluid
Umbrella sampling Monte Carlo simulations are used to calculate free energy barriers to homogeneous liquid–vapor nucleation in the superheated Lennard-Jones fluid. The calculated free energy barriers decrease with increased superheating and vanish at the spinodal curve. A statistical geometric analysis reveals the existence of two types of voids: Small interstitial cavities, which are present e...
متن کاملSurface tension of a Lennard-Jones liquid under supersaturation.
A formally exact Kirkwood-Buff virial formula for the surface tension of a supersaturated interface is derived. A modified Gibbs ensemble method is given that allows the creation of interacting supersaturated phases of equal chemical potential, and which enables the Kirkwood-Buff formula to be applied. The methods are tested by Monte Carlo simulation of a supersaturated Lennard-Jones fluid with...
متن کاملMolecular-dynamics simulation of argon nucleation from supersaturated vapor in the NVE ensemble.
The possibility to conduct simulations of homogeneous nucleation of argon from a supersaturated vapor phase using a microcanonical or NVE ensemble is evaluated (NVE: number of particles N, volume V, and energy E are constant). In order to initiate a phase separation kinetic energy is removed from the system in one step which transfers the system into a supersaturated state. After this temperatu...
متن کاملEvaluation of the performance of parallel-hole collimator for high resolution small animal SPECT: A Monte Carlo study
Introduction: Image quality and accuracy of in vivo activity quantification in SPECT are affected by collimator penetration and scatter components, especially in high energy imaging. These phenomena highly depend on the collimator characteristic and photon energy. The presence of penetrated and scattered photons from collimator in SPECT images degrades spatial resolution, contr...
